Red Rover, Red Rover, Bring Supplies Right Over…

Iowa City’s Domestic Violence Intervention Program, DVIP is the only domestic violence program in Iowa with an organized safe pet program. Named Cooper’s House, in memory of a DVIP dog, DVIP was awarded a national grant from Red Rover to expand support services on premises. This provides the therapeutic value of families and pets staying together when they are in crisis.

Up to 70% of domestic violence victims report having a pet. Abusers threaten, injure, and at times kill pets to control their victims and create an environment of fear within the home. Approximately 48% of women have refused to leave a dangerous situation for fear of their pets’ safety.

Cooper’s House is ready, the food pantry is stocked, but the toy cupboard is empty! Join us on Saturday April 28th as we partner with DVIP to stock Cooper’s House. We will have generous sales on beds, blankets, toys, treats and health products specifically needed for donation.  DVIP staff will showcase Cooper’s house and provide information about DVIP. Leash on Life staff will host demos of products helpful for all dogs and cats in times of transition.

It’s that time of year again, March Madness. For some it’s the basketball tournament office pool, but for those of us with dogs we know the madness is in the house. During the month of March check out sales on Primal Frozen bones, cases of Fromm dog & cat cans, new interactive toys, new collars by Jess Betts designs and Up Country, outdoor products by Kurgo and check out the “tried & true, but need to make room for new items” sale table. 03Clean Up!

As we wait for spring we are all reminded of the ‘great spring melt down.’ Yes, after many winter months of keeping warm from the freezing temperatures, everyone is ready to be outside. This means making your way through all the slush and muck. While dirty dogs may have more fun, the same may not be true for your floors and furniture. Our new Tall Tails Paw Mitts are just the thing to keep in the car or at your door. Absorbent and machine washable they absorb the grim and make for easy cleanup.

February Newsletter 2018

Nulo, “where NUtrition meets LOve”
Thanks to Nulo’s passion for pet nutrition and healthy lifestyles, we are giving away a Fit Bit! Our winner will count every happy step of those Spring dog walks.

zDuring the month of February enter to win the fit bit with every purchase of Nulo.  Second and third place will win free Nulo cat/dog food! To remind you…Nulo is proudly made in the U.S. using only the highest quality ingredients. Nulo is low in carbs and uses low glycemic ingredients in every recipe. Great nutrition isn’t worth much if it isn’t digested thoroughly. Nulo has a patented probiotic to provide better nutrient absorption. Haven’t tried Nulo? With our satisfaction guarantee, now is the time to try.

Let’s See Those Pearly Whites…

February is pet dental month. The bacteria living in your pet’s mouth may be causing the bad breath which makes you avoid those most excited kisses. These bacteria can lead to oral disease and increase the risk for more serious illness including heart disease. The American Veterinary Dental Society reports that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. Warning signs include bad breath, tartar and swollen red gums. Fractured teeth or cavities can be painful and may change your pet’s eating habits.
Prevention is the key to good health, so we are helping you with a sale. Check out our selection of quality and cost-effective tooth brushes/paste, water additives & chews which aid in keeping those teeth clean. There are many options of dental care for your dog or cat, but it is hard to beat brushing; the challenge of course, is getting us to comply.

Selective Hearing?
Selective hearing is not something unique to only human children. Sometimes you may even think your dog is deaf. You call them to come, ask them to sit…and they look at you like you are speaking a foreign language. That is because you are. You need to help them understand what you are asking. In Patricia McConnell’s book For the Love of a Dog she notes, “Many people seem to believe that dogs come to us able to read our minds and to translate whatever language we happen to be speaking in…The good news is that dog  training has evolved, and is full of humane and effective techniques as enjoyable for your dog as they are for you.”

We recommend Patricia McConnell and Ian Dunbar as Nationally recognized humane trainers. You can also explore the human dog relationship with other titles such as The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. We have excellent local trainers who ascribe to the positive reinforcement model. Stop in or call for recommendations.
Adoptable Guinea Pigs of the Month…
Da Zhang Wei and Hiu Chen Yu are both one year old. These handsome fellows are available through the Iowa City Adoption Center, call (319) 356-5295 or visit  to learn more about all the animals at the Center.

We have a plethora of treat dispensing toys for dogs, but until recently there has been a dearth of such toys for cats. But no more… we have many locally made cat puzzle toys/food dispensers.  These rock Picture4and roll to keep your cat busy working to get the food to fall out. Our Snuggles quickly figured out how to push this around the room to get her breakfast. These toys are great for the cat that eats too fast or for the one that yowls at you continually to be fed. Don’t have a dirty dog and still want to get in on the good cause fun? Yummy root beer floats for $3 will keep you cool too.

Adoptable Dog of the Month, Sandy…

Outdoor adventure?

1Can’t ALL dogs swim? Years ago we learned, accidentally, the short legs of our Basset Hound Sadie are no match for a farm pond. Thankfully, we have float coats for pooches lacking even the most basic water skills. Their design provides buoyancy, safety and even advanced swimmers tire.  Best to be safe when boating when waters get rough (ruff?). The luminescent colors are easy to spot in any lighting. And…..we have yet to figure out why Sadie took a long walk off a short dock.

What Floats your Boat?

West Paw toys float your boat! All the West Paws toys float and are made in the US. Their discs, balls, bones and their other toys are 2perfect for water retrieval and easy to be add to your summer picnic basket. Don’t forget to bring along some clean drinking water for you and your pets.

Stop Bugging Us…

mosquio pic newsletter July 17Biting flies, gnats and mosquitoes are a bother to all of us, dogs and cats included. Mosquitoes transmit heartworms to dogs and cats. Heartworm prevention is a must and only available from your vet. For fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, we carry Advantix spot-on for dogs, Advantage for cats and home treatment products.

In response to customer inquiries, we now carry Wondercide spray for your pets and home. It is a natural repellant and insecticide for fleas, ticks, mosquitos and flies.

If you use a spray-on bug repellent please remember that dogs and cats are extremely sensitive to DEET and may develop neurological problems from DEET. Pyrethrin, a chemical derived from the chrysanthemum plant, and its synthetic equivalent, Permethrin, are often used for insect control on dogs and horses, but cat parents should be very careful as Permethrin is dangerous for felines.

Adoptable Dog of the Month, Daphne…
Daphne is a cute 3 month old gal. She is a Chihuahua mix and likes to cuddle. She has siblings available for adoption too. Daphne is available through the Iowa City 4Adoption Center, call (319) 356-5295 or visit  to learn more about all the animals at the Center.

It is shorts and sandals time for us, but not your best friend. Imagine cooling yourself off only by panting, and imagine how hot your body temperature would be and how dehydrated you would become. For this reason, please carry water for your dog when you go on walks or the dog park. Leash on Life carries portable water bottles for your dog that hook on your belt for easy carrying. The Gulpy stores and serves water all in one easy-to-use bottle. The flip open/close design, also makes it very handy. If you plan on traveling or walking with your dog, H2O is one item you don't want to be without, particularly in the summer heat. If you already have a water bottle we also have collapsible bowls.
Please remember, while your dog may enjoy an evening walk, most do not enjoy large summer festivals or firework displays. The pavement is hot on sensitive dog feet and the humidity effects them just as it does us. They may be better at home in the air conditioning.

You can learn more about heat and your dog by checking out the “Dog Day’s of Summer” on our new web site!

The term ‘dog days’ has nothing to do with dogs. It dates back to Roman time2017-06-05_1550s, when it was believed Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July 3rd to August 11th, creating exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period dies caniculares, literally ‘days of the dog.’ Not just a pretty light, the Dog Star is a symbol of power, will, and steadfastness of purpose, and exemplifies the One who has succeeded in bridging the lower and higher consciousness.

Safe Travels…2017-06-05_1551_001
If you are planning on taking your dog on vacation (or anywhere), a car harness is a good safety idea. Not only does it help keep your dog from being thrown and injured if you were to be in an accident, it also keeps them restrained so they do not interfere with your driving. Not all of our pets are as good of a driver as Toonces was. Kennels also work well for safety for both dogs and cats.

Bump in the Night…
2017-06-05_1559_001Summer has made her appearance and with her comes thunder and fireworks which frighten many dogs & cats. We have a variety of calming treats. All work by different natural, non-sedative methods to
assist anxious situations. Treatibles contain a blend of phytocannabinoid hemp including CBD. In addition to a calming effect there is anecdotal pet owner observations of help with pain and inflammation. Happy Traveler does more than make the ride go smoothly, it helps with any stressful situation. Herbal2017-06-05_1559 ingredients assist with stress and nervousness. Happy Traveler has the National Animal Supplements Council (NASC) seal of quality testing. Calming Treats from Vermont Pet Naturals are NASC approved as well. These treats focus on B Vitamins and Colostrum to help manage stress. An option other than treats are Thundershirts™. Eighty-five percent of dogs (satisfaction guaranteed) show significant improvement with their anxiety symptoms when wearing their Thundershirt™.  Experts such as Dr. Temple Grandin believe the gentle constant pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system. We also carry Thunderspray and other pheromone sprays and collars. These work nicely in tandem when sprayed on the Thundershirt.

Adoptable Rabbit of the Month, Thumper…
Thumper is a cute 2 years old fellow. Thumper is available through the Iowa City Adoption Center, call (319) 356-5295 or visit to learn more about all the animals at the Center.
